Diagnosed and operation for male breast cancer

I was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer last week and had my operation (left breast mastectomy) a few days ago.  Back at home resting.  All a big shock how quickly this has all happened  and didn’t even know men got breast cancer.  Apparently only 400 men in the UK each year.  All the medical support from the NHS has been brilliant.  Joined the forum to share and discuss the journey ahead!

  • Hi Dhs2596,

A very warm welcome to the forum.

Yes, although fewer in numbers, men do unfortunately, get breast cancer too. It sounds as if you have caught this early and I'm glad to hear that you've already had a mastectomy. Have you discussed any treatment going forward yet? I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer, within a year. I had a lumpectomy at first, then a double mastectomy for the second bout. That was all 16 years ago and I still lead a busy and fulfilling life.

There have been contributions from a number of men with breast cancer on this forum. You will find some if you use the search box at the top of the page. I hope that you make good progress with your recuperation. Please keep in touch and let us know how you're getting on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you Jolamine   I am going back to see the consultant in a few weeks so should find out more about follow up then   Great to hear you are doing so well

  • Hi Dhs2596,

I do indeed feel very fortunate!

Your consultant will probably want you to heal from your recent surgery, before suggesting any further treatment. Do please keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

  • Will do.   Thanks Jolamine.
