High Grade DCIS with another biopsy result pending

Hi all. Be just good to get this out really.

Diagnosed with the above about two weeks ago following a routine mammogram which then led to biopsy and further mammogram etc. Results came back as high grade DCIS but I then had to have another biopsy on the same breast as they found another suspicious patch. Assuming that only showed up on the follow up mammogram. Get the results back next week for that, then treatment plan will be in place.

I haven't told many people - i have friends who have had breast cancer, but i almost feel a fraud (is that weird?) having seen what they have gone through compared to the treatment I'll probably have, assuming lumpectomy and then maybe radiotherapy. My family know, husband is doing his best to support but all he is hearing is 'pre-cancer' which is what the consultant said, before I was handed the DCIS literature and then did my own research. That was confusing in itself.

I had thought it was low grade until I got the letter through with words like high grade, comedo necrosis etc but I don't think I was really taking much in at my diagnosis and I don't remember this being mentioned. I must admit I had a wobble that day but I just keep reminding myself now its not invasive and thank god for the breast screening programme now I'm mid fifties, so its been caught early.

I think I just needed to say all this to the universe as I'm not telling anyone that doesn't need to know - i have a couple of friends who mean well but they will definitely turn it into a drama!

Wishing you all well and hope you're all doing ok.

  • Hi Ivypie,

I am sorry to hear about your diagnosis. How did you get on with the biopsy results from your second mammogram?

We are always here for you.

  • Hi Steph and Jolamine

Thank you for responding. I've had my op and am now two weeks post op - i had lumpectomy and they removed the suspicious patch (not sure if that's classed as a lumpectomy too?).

I've just come back from my post op appt which was a waste of time as they didn't have my results. They weren't even going to look at my wounds until I said nobody had seen me and I still had dressings on. Wounds are healing well, I've got a fair amount of numbness and still sore but so far so good, few more weeks should see me healed.

The consultant said she was going to get me a phone call for results with my surgeon - I'm not happy with that - I mean is that normal, without them knowing the lab results? I'm going to phone tomorrow and ask for a face to face regardless of the outcome, I'm not good on phone calls.

Sorry for unloading, I'd been building up to getting either good or bad news today and I just want to scream a bit now!

Also waiting for results from a second urine test as they found blood in my wee on my operation day, with no obvious causes (no UTI etc symptoms)

Thanks for reading, sorry if I sound like a moany cow, I'm usually pretty positive

  • Hi Ivypie,

Thank you for the update. I'm glad to hear that your surgery went well, but understand your frustration in not getting your results. Have you been told when these should be back? I do hope that you don't have too long to wait as this is always an anxious time. Some busy clinics do give results over the phone, but I'm sure that the surgeon wouldn't phone, until the results are back and have been discussed at one of the regular MDT (Multi-Disciplinary team) meetings. I hope that you manage to get a face-to-face appointment and that your results show a clear margin.

The blood in your urine on operation day sounds strange, when you've had no symptoms - I hope that the results show no cause for concern. Please let us know when you get your results. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
