Melanoma 1a

Hello, I’m 32, and by a total chance I had my melanoma spotted, and removed. To say that the diagnosis was a shock is an understatement.

im seeing a consultant about WLE in two days. My mole was 0.5mm breslow depth, superficial spreading, no ulceration , clear margins. I was already told lymph biopsy is not offered for those types but I can discuss them still.

I want to understand more about why wouldn’t one want one? This is the only way to know whether it’s in the lymph nodes in any capacity and can spread??

thsnk you in advance for any help and advice

  • Heya. Call the helpline on 0808 800 4040 in order to talk with a nurse. Have a list of things to discuss with the hospital team. Use a pen for note making too.

  • Hello Daria312

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently been diagnosed with melanoma. It's understandable that this might have come as a shock to you, but it sounds like the team is confident they have caught this early, and hopefully, they will be able to offer you some reassurance when you see them this week.

Not everyone with melanoma skin cancer needs a sentinel lymph node biopsy - it depends on the size of the melanoma when you were diagnosed. You can read more information about sentinel lymph node biopsy for melanoma on our website.

Do talk through your concerns with the specialist. I'm sure that they will be able to explain in greater detail why they feel an SNLB is not indicated in your case and talk through the next steps in your care.

If it would help to chat things through with one of our nurses at any point, you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

Do let us know how you get on Daria123; we're here for you.

    Best wishes,
