Kidney cancer - I think I'm still in shock. I'm also feeling anxious about having surgery. Can someone put my mind at ease?

I have just been told that I have Kidney cancer And I am still in shock I think it’s not really hit me yet I have to have surgery to remove my Kidney it has not spread to any other organs I don’t know how I feel about having such a large operation  I have only ever had minor procedures in hospital I am more anxious of the operation than the diagnosis can anyone  please put my mind at rest xx thank you

  • I too have kidney cancer and currently receiving treatment at the xxxx hospital. I don't know you but know that I'm rooting for you.

You have to will your survival.

  • I was diagnosed Friday, I don't know how I should be feeling.  Given a pack to read and just told to wait for the operation appointment to come through.  In the meantime work just keep asking let us know whether we can do anything.  Issue is I don't know day to day how I am  Today I am exhausted, Sunday I managed the gym. I feel a fraud.

I can't put your mind at rest other than to say I know what it's like.

  • Heya. You can do this. Call the helpline on 0808 800 4040 to talk with a nurse. Action Kidney Cancer have information. Good luck.

  • Hi bushy

I was diagnosed with kidney cancer and had the operation in October 2025 .. like myself I’d never had major surgery before

The consultant(s) and nursing staff reassured me that I was in safe hands .. the operation was a robotic procedure which is a lot better.. my whole left kidney was removed .. my recovery from the operation is going well.

i waited 8 weeks from being diagnosed to having the surgery…

I recovered well from the anesthetic after surgery .. nurses had me out of bed the next day and helping me navigate everything  like going to toilet etc .. eating my meals when I didn’t feel like it and reassuring me I can do it and to listen to my body and try not to overdo it

there will be days when you feel really tired so just take your rest when you need to. ( I slept a lot when I got home)

if you are at home alone .. get yourself some ready meals done as this will help especially in your recovery.. I didn’t feel like cooking and found ready meals a life saver

    • I know your feelings and emotions will be all over the place but you will get thru it (if I can so can you)
  • Thank you so much for reassuring me after what you have said I feel less anxious did they get all the cancer out with the kidney  because I have been told that sometimes you have to have some lymph node’s removed aswell My surgery is planned for Monday 1st June so only a week to go also how long were you in hospital for I am having robotic surgery aswell

  • Hi ya … your consultant would’ve explained about the procedure but like myself struggled to take it all in …

My consultant informed that it was only 2cm and he would take a look to see if he could remove the cancer without removing my kidney

But if he feels that it’s too risky then he would just remove the whole kidney ( the risk was that only taking the tumour out he didn’t want to run the the risk of it spreading …

by having the kidney removed completely I didn’t require chemo or radiotherapy which I was so pleased as the main thing I didn’t want to loose my hair (a ladies pride and joy)

do you remember what your consultant said to you ?? Do you know the size of your tumour?

I wasn’t in hospital long ( 2nights) .. I had the op on a Tuesday afternoon and I went home on the Thursday afternoon ..! To return to get my sharps box and injections and my stockings of course which i was told to wear for 4 weeks helps stop blood clots ( didn’t like them things)

I had staples in and these were took out by the practice nurse at the GP surgery .

I didn’t even have to use my lovely pjs I got for hospital I was kept in the hospital gown .

if you have any more questions please feel free to ask .. this is such an emotional roller coaster for you it’s helps to relate to someone who’s gone thru it x

  • Wishing you well for your surgery .. I will be thinking of you … whatever area/hospital your in the consultants and nurses are worth their weight in gold… they do an excellent job

  • Hope your surgery goes well xx mine is scheduled for 23rd.

    What are the injections for?
