Mastectomy - What pillows do I need?

Hi! I’ve got a mastectomy coming up on Monday on my right breast, and a lumpectomy on my left with immediate reconstructive surgery.

I’m guessing I’ll struggle to get comfortable and sleep, so could anyone please recommend what pillows etc I should invest in!

Thank you

  • Is there a better thread I could put my question on? I’m getting views but no responses? My surgery is on Monday so I need to get ordering something!

  • Hi Mabels-Mummy and welcome to the Cancer Chat community.

I'm sorry you haven't heard back from anyone just yet but I wanted to reassure you that your post has been seen and to wish you all the best with your upcoming surgery.

Whilst we can't recommend any pillows you may find want to have a look at some of the mastectomy and post-surgery products that we have on our website, including the post-surgery heart comfort cushion.

I also found this discussion about pillow post breast surgery that was made on the forum last year. As you'll see, there are a lot of tips and advice on what pillows to use and how to get comfortable when going to sleep.

I hope this helps Mabels-Mummy but you can also give our team of cancer nurses a call on 0808 800 4040 if you'd like to discuss this further. Their phone lines are open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and they'll do all they can to help.

Do make sure you have a chat about this with your breast cancer nurse as well as they will be able to advise and provide you with more information about your mastectomy and possible problems after surgery.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator

  • Hi there, sorry to hear about your upcoming operation. I had a right mastectomy and immediate reconstruction 6 days ago. I also had a left side reduction and augmentation and uplift. I bought a large v. shaped pillow. I lie it up against my normal pillow in bed. This allows me to sit up in bed and allow my wound drain to work.
