PCI radiotherapy has been offered to prevent my lung cancer spreading to my brain. Has anyone had this treatment? What were the side effects like?

I am currently halfway through an intensive course of chemotherapy and radiotherapy after being diagnosed with small cell lung cancer which, thankfully, hasn't spread anywhere else in my body. I am also being offered PCI radiotherapy to help prevent it spreading to my brain. I am terrified how that treatment might affect me. What scares me the most is the possibility and severity of memory loss. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has undergone that treatment, any side effects experienced and any advice they can offer. Thank you.

  • Hello Trubeam

I'm sorry to hear that you were diagnosed with small-cell lung cancer recently. I hope that your current treatment regime of chemotherapy and radiotherapy isn't proving too difficult and that you're being well supported by loved ones and health professionals.

It's understandable that you might have some questions and concerns about the Prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI). Hopefully you'll be able to connect with others who have been through this treatment, but I'd also really encourage you to talk with your health care team about the concerns that you have. You're also most welcome to give our team of nurses a call to talk things through with them. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Whatever decision you make about treatment Trubeam, I wish you well and hope for good health.

    Best wishes,
