Mouth cancer - diagnosed with cancer of the jaw and been waiting ages for surgery. I'm so stressed out as it could now be put back to end of Feb/early March

I was referred by my dentist due to red patches near my back molars mid nov 25, After biopsy M,R,I, AND C.T. scan it was confirmed i had cancer of the jaw, ( ie poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma)  Although i was diagnosed in Suffolk MY surgery is suppose to be in Norfolk.

It was agreed with the multidisciplinary team that i need surgery ie partial maxillectomy , neck dissection, also bone  either from my leg or arm including tissue for jaw and upper hard palate, I saw the surgeon very early Jan 26 and he confirmed surgery is urgent, However despite telephoning lots of times all i got was answer machine,  I left massage no reply  to ascertain when my surgery was going to be.

After getting very frustrated I phoned the surgeon's secretary who kindly arranged for an appointment today. I asked why i haven't got a date especially as my cancer waiting time is now 82 days (with 62 being the objective) he asked me to wait outside whist he looked into this.   Upon re entering    he couldn't give me a clear reason and due to the length of time he suggested another M.R.I. scan to compare the two to make sure it hasn't spread further . Whilst I have no problem with this to compound the issue the surgeon is on holiday for two weeks .He suggested if there is not much different in the scans , he could do the surgery when he is back from holiday.  Whilst I don't really want to change surgeons , will i not risk possible escalation of the cancer.

I am so stressed out as my operation could be put back till end of February/early March  it feels I am dammed if I do and Dammed if I don't

Has anyone encountered this problem with mouth cancer ?

  • Hello redd607

I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis and the situation you find yourself in regarding a delayed surgery. It's understandable that you're feeling concerned and frustrated by things.

It's difficult for anyone here to say if the surgery being delayed until the end of February/beginning of March will change the outcome. That is something to certainly ask your specialist about, as they will have the information regarding how the cancer is currently behaving. You can also raise your concerns about the delay with the hospital PALS team if you want to. It's part of their role to help resolve concerns when using the NHS.

If you'd like to talk with one of our nurses for some advice and support, you're most welcome to give them a call. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, informarion and support they can. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Keep in touch and let us know how you get on redd607. We're here for you.

    Best wishes,
