Seroma - had it drained twice but can see it swelling again already. How long will this keep happening? Also, terrified of having chemo. Has anyone refused?

Good morning . I had a lumpectomy 4 weeks ago & lymph nodes removed .I had drains in place , removed , and had a seroma this has been drained twice but I see the swelling under my arms is coming back after the last drainage three days ago. I wondered how long these seromas kept swelling under the arm if anyone can help please can you tell me
I am also waiting to see the oncologist before any treatment starts  I believe I might have to have chemotherapy as her2 was positive deffinitely radiotherapy I am petrified of having chemo and I wondered if any other people out there have refused having that I am getting very old but very fit. I just cannot imagine losing my hair and nearly taking a year out of an old life. Is anyone out there that refused chemo or didn’t have to have it when you were H ER two positive. I’m scared. thank you for listening

  • Hello Scraggy and welcome to the Cancer Chat community.

I'm sorry to hear you've had to have your seroma drained twice and feel it may be filling up again already. This must be very frustrating but hopefully this will start to settle down soon and go away on it's own. Many of our members have contended with seromas during their breast cancer treatment too Scraggy, so you are not alone, and hopefully some of them will stop by soon to share their experiences and advice.

I hope this information we have about chemotherapy for breast cancer will help to ease your mind about having this done but if it would help to talk things through with someone you can give our cancer nurses a call on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. With their knowledge and insight they will do all they can to address your concerns and will be able to answer your questions about seromas as well.

Having treatment for cancer is never easy but you're doing so well Scraggy and I hope things continue to go smoothly as you move forward on this journey.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
