Dad Diagnosed with Sarcomatoid Urothelial Carcinoma, Stage 4 - does anyone else have experience of this rare variant of bladder cancer ?

My Dad has been diagnosed recently with Stage 4 Sarcomatoid Urothelial Ca, I know it is a pretty rare type of bladder cancer which doesn't respond to chemo/radio/immunotherapy and is very aggressive.

Our best hope of prolonging his life is a radical cystectomy but before we get to that stage he has to undergo debulking of the tumour in the bladder and get a kidney stent inserted followed by a nephrostomy if the stent fails.

Given the aggressive nature of this cancer and it's poor prognosis I have significant heart sink about the outcome here and wondered if anyone else has experience with someone diagnosed with this specific cancer ?

  • Hello Ali-Bali

I'm sorry to hear about your Dad's diagnosis. It's understandable that this has been difficult news to hear and that you've been feeling low about the situation.

I can't see that we have any other members here who have posted about this rare diagnosis. You might want to have a look at the Action Bladder Cancer UK to see if you can connect with anyone through their support services.

If it would help to talk things through with one of our team of nurses, you're most welcome to give them a call. They're available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, on 0808 800 4040. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can.

I hope that your Dad is being well supported by the urology team. Keep in touch and let us know how he gets on. We're here for you.

    Best wishes,
