Dad diagnosis - CT scan shows he has gallbladder cancer but he hasn't had a biopsy. We don't know what stage either. Can someone shed some light on this please?

Hi my dad had an appointment on Friday to see his consultant and was told to bring a family member with him which was me .
we where told that his ct scan shows he has gallbladder cancer but he hasn’t had a biopsy . They also said that he won’t be able to receive any treatment as it would be to toxic for his  body and his age is against him . (His 80)

I was wondering how and why they have said that he has cancer without doing a biopsy . We don’t know what stage the cancer is either . I should have asked more question but was in shock at the news . He has been taken off the cancer path way now and has to see his GP this week so will ask more about then but just wondered If anyone could shed some light on this please .
many thanks .

  • Hello Balloons11

I'm sorry to hear that your Dad was told last week that he has gallbladder cancer and that, unfortunately, the specialists feel that there are no treatment options available to your Dad. This must have been very hard news for you to both hear.

The specialists will have taken all the information that they have with CT scan results, and any other results, such as blood tests/scans, and used that information to make a diagnosis. Sometimes it's possible for specialists to give a diagnosis without the need for a biopsy based on the other results and information they have available, along with their years of expertise.

It's understandable that you have lots of questions and hopefully your Dad's GP will be able to give you some answers and reassurance when you see them this week. You're also most welcome to talk things through with one of our team of nurses. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can. They're available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Hopefully your Dad, and you, will feel well supported by his GP and the care that will be available to him. Don't be afraid to lean on the GP surgery for advice and support and of course you're most welcome to keep posting here in the Cancer Chat forum if it helps to have a safe space to put down in writing how you're feeling, ask questions or chat with others who understand. We're here for you.

Sending my best wishes to you both,
