Chirrossis and hcc waiting mri for my husband

Hi! New here im a nurse and my husband was suffering d&v progressively worsening for 2 months.... he is type 2 diabetic on medication I know through my career can damage the kidneys...

After much nagging he arranged a GP appointment... it was disappointing the GP touched his stomach barely! Gave him stuff to send away stool samples, lopermide and cyclizine and said he should get bloods done! The blood appointment was a whole week after the GP one!

The day after his routine bloods my husband came home vomited as per usual but he was sob and dizzy as a nurse on a Friday night I said no enough nhs 24 phone now! I was seriously worried he was dehydrated and his kidneys were in danger

He was sent to a local ED although close not our health board! Anyway his liver function tests came back abnormal so they chose to admit him for a ultrasound. That stuff doesnt happen at a weekend so he remained an inpatient and actually got a CT scan on the monday .... the ward he was in was not his speciality of GI so the doctors didn't tell us the scan result they insisted on waiting for GI input...the day after we got told by an specialist GI nurse his scan showed cirrhosis and a suspicious spot possibly HCC ( CANCER) he would need ultrasound which he got the next day.

After the ultrasound they confirmed cirrhosis and they said it was cancer based on the ct ultrasound and  a tumour marker in his blood tests. They said they need urgent MRI to stage and discuss options. That was Friday now we are on monday my husband still and in hospital passing clear mucous from his bowels every hour with the odd plop of stool and no mri yet....

Has anyone got an experience of waiting an mri as an inpatient in a small hospital also how long from the mri to results and start of treatment... im an admissions nurse so deal with the emergency things not used to ward and long stay situations! I'm used to diagnosing treating and moving on or discharging! We are all worried here 3 teenagers and me the wife a nurse in a different health board where my patients waiting mri usually get within a day or 2 most im a bit concerned as want to know what we are facing. His cirrhosis is secondary to his diabetes his eyes are yellowing he has lost so much weight in the last few months and ive seen the worst of these situations so my mind is going into overdrive naturally

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat, Lexus16 and thank you for sharing what’s been happening with your husband.

It sounds like it’s been an incredibly worrying and exhausting time for you all, especially with your background in nursing as knowing just enough to recognise the seriousness of things, but having to wait without clear answers, can make it even harder.

It’s understandable that you’re anxious about the delay with the MRI and what comes next. The waiting can feel unbearable when you just want to know what you’re facing and what the next steps are.

It’s good that your husband is being kept in hospital where he can be monitored closely, especially with his dehydration, liver function and diabetes to manage. Hopefully the MRI will take place soon so his medical team can plan his treatment.

You’re doing everything right by being proactive and speaking up for him. It might help to ask the ward staff or the nurse in charge if they can find out when the MRI is likely to happen, or if it’s been requested as urgent, sometimes a gentle reminder helps things move along.

If you’d like to talk things through, our nurses are here Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., on 0808 800 4040.

I hope you get some clearer news soon and that your husband feels more comfortable while he waits.

Best wishes to you and your family,

    Renata, Cancer Chat Moderator
