Scared and angry - diagnosed with lung cancer a month ago. First oncology appointment this month. I'm so worried about what's to come

  • Hello MarionorEvans,

A warm welcome to Cancer Chat. It must have been a bit of a shock for you to be diagnosed with lung cancer just a month ago and I wanted to wish you the best of luck for your first oncology appointment. There can be a lot of uncertainty right after a cancer diagnosis and there is a lot to process when you don't even have all the facts yet so it can be a bit of a frightening experience for you. It is normal to be worried, scared and frightened and I just wanted you to know that you are not alone and there are other members here who have also been diagnosed with lung cancer whether recently or a while ago and I hope that they will drop by to share their treatment experiences with you.

There is still a lot of unknown regarding your treatment or the details of your diagnosis and I thought I would share with you our information on treatment for lung cancer including on chemotherapy for lung cancer. I am not sure what type of surgery you will be having but you can find out more about all the different types on our website on surgery for lung cancer. I would also suggest you write down any questions you might have ahead of your oncology appointment as it's easy sometimes to forget what we meant to ask.

Feel free also to get in touch with our cancer nurses at any point if you have any questions or if you simply need to talk things through - you can call them on this free number 0808 800 4040 Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I also wanted to mention other members I have come across recently who have also been diagnosed with lung cancer and for example  posted only a few weeks ago this thread about being diagnosed with stage 2 lung cancer and they were at the time waiting to start chemotherapy followed by surgery.  is another example and they posted this thread after just finding out they had lung cancer. These are just a couple of recent examples and don't hesitate to reply to any thread you feel you would like to respond to.

Wishing you the best of luck for your appointment I hope it all goes well for you on the 24th and that you find out more about your treatment plan. We are all here for you every step of the way and many on here have been through this before and I hope that they will come and say hello and share their story with you.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi just to share with you hopefully put you at ease of any treatment.
my experience. In 2020 (during Covid) I was diagnosed with Lung Cancer I had an upper lobe ectomy of right lung followed by Chemotherapy. In 2023 I was diagnosed with Cancer in left lung  I had a wedge resection  then in July this year another wedge resection on left lung this keeps returning so this Thursday 6th November I am having a upper lobe ectomy of left lung.
I do lead a relatively normal life I walk 2-3 miles each day I also swim. I work full time as a Carer.
Yes it is frightening and yes I get Angry but please think positive it has been found early and treatment starting soon. Do reach out to others you are not alone.
