Kidney Cancer - why all the urgent referrals?

After CT scan for liver cirrhosis they found an area on my kidney they believe is cancer, having another scan next week to check it has not spread.  However I have also been referred on a two-week cancer plan to the MDT and a Urologist appointment 2 days after scan.  If they only believed it may be cancer why all of the urgent referrals.  I have dealt with 5 skin cancers but this one scares me as only found after cirrhosis confirmation.  I was referred as found autoimmune cells in a blood test, which I then hear from my consultant were also found in an older test but not acted upon, now worried the cancer may have been there for longer and could have perhaps been avoided, or dealt with sooner if it has in fact spread  I realise this is so much more minor than some of the other posts here, so sorry.

  • Hello SV1 and welcome to Cancer Chat.

I'm really sorry to hear that cancer has been found on your kidney and you are awaiting further tests to find out if it has spread.

This must be an incredibly stressful and worrying time but I'm glad you've reached out to us as so many of our members will know what you are going through, so you are not alone SV1, and hopefully it won't be long until you receive some support and advice.

I can see you have a lot of questions about what is going on so if it would help to talk things through with someone, we have a team of cancer nurses available on 0808 800 4040. Their helpline is open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and they will do all they can to address your concerns and support you whilst you wait.

We're wishing you all the best with your tests next week SV1, and we'll have our fingers crossed the cancer hasn't spread.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
