How do I support my husband, newly diagnosed with prostate cancer?

Only one week ago my husband had severe pain in his upper back shoulders and collar bones with reduced grip in his left hand, we thought trapped nerve and he took painkillers. At work Monday the weakness in his hand was worse, I rang to make an appointment with the GP, on his symptoms they advised to go to A&E.

Suspected heart attack -clear suspected stroke-clear suspected aortic anyuerism -clear. All good news. Bad news was the scan showed clusters of inguinale and mesorectal lymph nodes and indicating cancer either of rectum prostate.

Colonoscopy today absolutely clear, but felt mass on his prostate, so waiting for urology appointment.

My problem is he is so happy not to have bowel cancer (His brother has prostate cancer but very slow growing and just being monitored) I am terrified what stage he is at due to involvement of the lymph nodes and the pain in his collar bones, trying to be really positive until we know what we are dealing with, but really scared for him.

  • Hello T-J1968 and welcome to Cancer Chat,

I'm sorry to hear about your husband's symptoms and I do hope his urology appointment comes soon so you'll be able to know what's going on. When a loved one has suspected cancer, it's natural to feel scared and helpless sometimes, but I think it's great that you're remaining supportive and positive. No doubt your husband is grateful to have you by his side, so keep doing what you're doing. There's also guidance for family, friends and carers on our website if you ever need it and the forum is here for you too!

All the best and do keep us updated,
