Oesophageal cancer - just been diagnosed and would like to find out more about it and what I can expect from treatment (chemotherapy and radiotherapy)

A recent biopsy result has shown malignant cells in lesions on my oesophagus. My consultant hasn’t recommended surgery at this stage but has ordered a new scan and has talked about chemotherapy or radiotherapy in a few weeks time. I am anxious to learn more about the illness, stages and prognosis. For instance what stage my cancer is likely to be in and what I can expect from treatment.

If you think it might be helpful to talk things through with one of our nurses ahead of your next appointment with the specialists, then you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can.

  • Many thanks for getting back to me. I don’t feel unwell at this stage, neither do I have difficulty swallowing, but I am anxious to start treatment. I missed a call from the hospital on Wednesday, but they haven’t rung back. Perhaps my appointment is in the post.

I do realise that age is against me. I turned 73 in June and I am not very mobile having had a hip replacement last November.

But overall I feel upbeat about the diagnosis. I thought something was wrong for some time but you put these things off. It came to a head about 4 weeks ago when I had a bad episode and my GP sent me straight to the hospital. They took a biopsy during a weekend stay as an inpatient and that was when they discovered the malignant cells. They informed my wife and I of the results on Tuesday.

As I said I don’t feel ill at the moment. Probably early stage although they didn’t tell me, they just weighed me and sent me home to await my appointments. But it does feel good to talk to someone about it. My apologies for rambling on a bit, just a bit worried is all.

    Kind regards

    Stephen (Jones)
