Prostrate cancer - struggling to get transferred to another hospital to get HIFU treatment. Worried cancer will spread outside the prostate if not done soon

Hi I’m trying to get HIFU treatment for my prostrate cancer, the problem is it’s taking so long to get replies from my urology department to transfer to another hospital I’m worried about the cancer spreading outside of the prostrate, it then becomes not treatable with HIFU

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat, Holty.

I’m sorry to hear you’re experiencing delays in getting a reply from your urology department, that sounds incredibly frustrating when you’re trying to be proactive about your treatment and explore HIFU as an option.

You’ve done the right thing by reaching out here, and I hope that others who’ve been through something similar will spot your post and share their experiences with getting referred for treatment, or with HIFU specifically.

If you feel it might help to talk things through, our nurses are available on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

I hope this helps a little and that you get the answers you seek soon.

    Best wishes,

  • HIFU is pretty new tech I think  -  would you be part of a trial? If so, obviously very few centres involved. I assume a less invasive alternative to usual ERT. Maybe you'll have to weigh the balance between latest innovative treatment and waiting time with the risk of spreading outside the prostate against prompter action with older ERT tech?

Difficult choice I guess. But then cancer often forces choices.

I must look into HIFU for my recurrent prostate cancer 4 years post ERT, but I suspect even the large, well equipped, local treatment centre doesn't yet offer it, even if suitable.

    Good luck.

    Dave.
