New diagnosis: they found a tumour on my kidney which has spread to my lungs and adrenal gland

I went into hospital with gallstones and after an ultrasound they found a tumour on my kidney which has already spread to my lungs and adrenal gland. It’s treatable but not curable and I have a small number of years with treatment. I’m married with grown up children and young grandchildren who are all devastated. How do you try be strong when you’re feeling ill

  • Hi Ajcjec,

I just wanted to stop by to welcome you to the forum and to let you know how sorry I am to hear about your diagnosis. This must be a very difficult time.

I also want to reassure you that it's o.k to not feel o.k. If you don't feel strong right now, don't force it. You need to put yourself first and although it's good to have a positive mindset, it's good to be aware of the other less welcome emotions a cancer diagnosis can bring as well. You can find out more about how cancer can make you feel on our website.

If it would help to have a chat with one of our cancer nurses, you can give them a call on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very easy to talk to and will do all they can to support you.

I'm sure some of our members will stop by soon to offer their thoughts and advice, but in the meantime be kind to yourself Ajcjec and remember that we will be by your side on every step of this journey.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator

  • Hi Ajcjec,

I just wanted to reach out and give you a bit of hope. My Dad was diagnosed with Kidney cancer 10 years ago. He was also stage 4 and it had spread to his adrenal glands, lungs and bones. He was put on a targeted drug called Sutent and it did a really good job at keeping his cancer at bay for many years. The treatment has been tough at times with some of the side effects but I guess I wanted to say stay strong, don’t give up.

Our cancer journey has been up and down for the past 10 years and if that’s taught us anything it’s not to give up hope. Cancer treatments are improving each month. The drug that’s helped my dad didn’t exist 15 years ago. Think about what drugs might be available in another year. It’s never a clear cut story with cancer and each person is unique, but kidney cancer survival is improving and my dad is testament to that.

10 years on, we are grateful we didn’t let my Dads cancer stop us from living. We would have missed the enjoyment in 10 whole years of life if he had. Ironically during this time we have lost several other family members from different issues during this same period - so it really goes to show none of us know what’s round the corner. It’s cliche but you have to find enjoyment in each day. Spend time doing things you love and take life expectancy with a pinch of salt.

I hole this perhaps brings you some small comfort

  • Thank you for your kind words it’s so nice to hear something positive xx
