Recently diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer

Hello,

I have recently been diagnosed with “suspected” ovarian cancer.

I am booked in for my pre-op assessment next Wednesday and my surgery for a full hysterectomy is booked in for the 2nd October.

I have been doing a lot of research over the past few days and have come to realise that this operation will completely incapacitate me for weeks.

I am otherwise very fit and healthy.
Walk my dog twice every day, on average 5 mile walks morning and afternoon and also do a 4 mile run on my treadmill daily - I average 30000+ steps per day.

This has come as a complete shock to us - I went for a routine HRT review with my doctor and happened to mention that my periods had returned to normal, at which point he put his pen down and started asking me about me bleeding.

To give some context, I started with menopausal symptoms 3 years ago, during which we were in a Covid lockdown and therefore could only speak with my doctor over the phone.  I had a telephone consultation, told him the symptoms and he prescribed me HRT medication - within 10 days from taking the medication I was back to normal and all symptoms had disappeared.  Approx 4 months later, my periods returned, regularly every 28 days - I thought this was normal.

Obviously I am being guided by my consultant following numerous scans and blood tests but would be really interested to hear if anyone has been through something similar.

Thank you

  • Hi Jo8640,

    Welcome to Cancer Chat.

I can understand that your diagnosis has come as a shock and that may take some time to process, so it's important to be kind to yourself and give yourself space to do that. As you say, your consultant will guide your through this so do raise any questions with them so you're well informed on what's to come. We also have plenty of information around surgery for ovarian cancer on our website, which you can refer to at any time. This forum is here whenever you need it and I'm sure members will reach out to you with their experiences. I hope the pre-op assessment goes ok on Wednesday and do keep us updated.

    All the best,
