Diagnosed today with Basal Cell Carcinoma on the nose and feeling worried.

I’ve gone and done what we would tell any friend not to do and that’s consult doctor Google. When you get a diagnosis, you want to find answers to your queries but it really hasn’t helped my nerves. I have a follow up appointment next week where the doctor will be discussing treatment.
I feel like my worry has been split in 2. There is the C word no one wants to hear and then I’m equally worried about what treatment I will need. I know it’s incredibly vain of me but I’m worried about how I’m going to look once they’ve cut it out. You can’t hide you nose!

  •   Hi Elizabeth, thank you for your comments and advice. I’ll be seeing the surgeon tomorrow to ask questions. My main concern is that there isn’t much skin on the nose! I’m not sure how it’s going to work? Do you mind me asking where abouts the Mohs surgery was done on your nose and did they use a skin flap?

    Thank you

  • Lou, given the sensitive location of your bcc it’s good that you’re able to go private and avoid the dire waiting list. Good luck formulating the questions. Based on what I failed to ask on Monday, you might want to ask if the surgeon himself/herself will do the surgery, and who would do it if he/she is not available. And how many stitches it’s likely to be. Good luck xx

  • The surgeon was able to close my incision with a long zigzag cut without the flap. I was in pain for a couple days- I had black eyes and bruised, swollen face. My cheek was swollen for a few weeks and it took a while for both sides of my face to look more even. They did pull some skin from my cheek/eye area, one side looks a little different but other people don’t notice. My skin cancer was where my glasses sit on my nose and on the left side. Good Luck!

  • Hi, Lou,

I had a BCC on the side of my nose right in the corner of my eye. It was cut out. I have a slight scar but no follow-up required. It is always a worry, but BCCs are generally very easily dealt with.

  •   Hi Dawn, I now have a date for surgery which will be at the beginning of November. Feeling anxious as not sure of the outcome. It all depends on how much skin they have to take away. I’ve been advised that it could be anything from being left with a slight dent in my nose or a skin graft taken from behind my ear or a skin flap from the top of my nose. All the scenarios keep going round in my head.
    Hope you’re doing ok xx

  •   Thank you for sharing your experience Elizabeth. It definitely helps to hear about other people’s stories. The worry of it all can feel like a lonely place at times. Trying to put on a brave face for everyone else becomes exhausting.
Pleased to hear that you sound like you are in a good place now.

Thank you. It’s encouraging to hear about other people’s positive outcomes. I really appreciate it.

  • Hi Lou, that’s great that you’ve got a date, and only a few weeks from now. I know the scenarios are anxiety provoking - it’s understandable you keep ruminating on the possibilities. But you’ve got the best type of surgery for your particular situation, and not too long a waiting list - you’re doing great so far. Well done! I’m still waiting for the next shoe to drop. After I saw the consultant 10 days ago, he said I’d hear from the hospital he was referring me to … but I should have asked when.
