Metastatic melanoma

Hi

my friend has been recently diagnosed with metastatic melanoma and we just feel that nothing is being done , he is in so much pain and hasn’t pooed for about 3 weeks , he is in Whipps currently but we just keep getting told they will be having another meeting next to discuss treatment , do we get a second opinion , ask for him to be moved ??? We are so scared and nothing seems to be being done for him

any advice would be greatly appreciated xx

  • Hi Kelly,

It's difficult to suggest what can be done for different reasons. You need to know his full melanoma history - his stage, where it's metastasized in the body, when he was diagnosed, what drug treatment he is on (if any yet) and which hospital/consultant he is under. Is he currently on a general ward, cancer ward or other specialist ward (ie. gastro)? If he is not on a ward in the hospital that is treating his melanoma, the doctors at Whipps will be liaising with your friend's consultant - if at a different hospital this can cause delays. So without knowing the whole picture you can't start asking for a second opinion or for him to be moved.

Also, if you are not his next of kin or have a Health Power of Attorney for him, they won't give you any information. Does he have a relative/next of kin that can help?

I know that it's distressing to see your friend in pain & I hope they get a treatment plan in place for him quickly.
