Hysterectomy - surgeon can't decide whether I should have open or laparoscopic. Has anyone had this whilst being overweight?

I have to have a radical hysterectomy with lymph node and ovary removal too - stage 1b1. My surgeon said as I am over weight and type 2 diabetic he can’t decide between open or laparoscopic. I’m 39 and BMI was 37 at the time. I’m on a huge health kick (protein high and lots of fresh salad and vegetables) so hoping by the time my surgery comes (the 2nd week in September) I will have lost a bit. Has anyone had this done whilst being over weight. I’m still quite active have 4 children, an active job and walk everywhere getting 10000 steps in almost always. Just looking for some real life similar situations and experiences. Thank you

  • Hi Tracey

I had a laparoscopic radical Hysterectomy in October 2024.

i had a similar BMI at the time but it went ahead without any complications. The recovery has been long and never expected the fatigue following the operation. I opted for brachytherapy following the surgery had this beginning of December 2024. The fatigue I think is due to the psychological impact of actually getting the diagnosis which I am just starting to process nearly a year after diagnosis. I had stage 1 b did not invade the lymph nodes. Positive to laparoscopic no scar soon heals has the incision are small I had three, discharge within 48 hours with pain killers.

Discuss with surgeon as you have a choice then healing his quicker with laparoscopic. Having a hysterectomy definitely feels different when the uterus is taken away the other organs fill the space. I personally have not had any issues with bladder or incontinence but brain fog and headaches have been difficult. Hope it goes well for you
