Relapsed MCL - been told I have Blastoid MCL. Does anyone else have this and been treated with Ibrutinib?

I was diagnosed with MCL two and half years ago as my spleen had swollen dramatically. It took about two months of investigation before I was properly diagnosed.
I had chemo for five months originally based on RCHOP added Cytarabine. I had strong side affects losing red, white blood cells and platelets but not fully recovering before the next chemo cycle began .

I had various tests before chemo including an ultrasound of my heart that showed that I was strong enough for the treatment. I was 69. The chemo got me into remission and I stayed in remission for about eighteen months. I relapsed in May when my neck glands swelled and was put in Ibrutinib. I am coping with Ibrutinib but have been told I have Blastoid MCL.   It is unlikely that anyone on the group has the blastoid variant but if there is I would like to compare notes.

I was able to get through chemo without blood transfusions using the three available manufactured drugs such as EPO. I refused blood due to my religious beliefs although there also many who refuse blood due to the risks involved. I got through chemotherapy quite well feeling great after but I do understand that some have had a worse experience and even died during chemo.

if anyone has experience of Blastoid diagnosis or Ibrutinib I would like to share experiences.

Philip

  • Hello Philip

I'm sorry to hear that you were recently told that your MCL has relapsed and that you have been told you now have Blastoid MCL. This must have been really difficult news to hear after being through treatment and 18 months of remission.

I've had a look through the forum, and whilst we have quite a few members who have shared their diagnosis of mantle cell lymphoma, I can't see that we have any other members who have mentioned Blastoid MCL. We do have quite a few posts where members have shared their experience of Ibrutinib, and you can find those using the search function at the top of the page.

It's possible that you may be able to connect with others who have personal experience of Blastoid MCL through a specific lymphoma charity such as Lymphoma Action UK. It's also worth asking your specialist cancer nurse if they know of any support groups locally where you could connect with others living with lymphoma.

If you'd like to talk things through with one of our nurses, you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can.

I hope that treatment goes as smoothly as possible for you, Philip. Do keep in touch with us here at Cacner Chat if it helps to have a safe space to put things down in writing.

    Best wishes,
    Jenn
