Basal Cell Carcinoma - having surgery tomorrow and feeling anxious. What can I expect?

Hi all recently diagnosed with Basal Cell carcinoma on my face which has been there about 9 years. Stupidly I never thought it was anything suspicious!

im having surgery tomorrow which will be an excision with flap. Due to my deep anxiety I’m having a general anesthetic but I’m terrified.

please can anyone reassure me at all as to what to expect .

thank you

  • Hi Jenny

All will go well today. It is a short operation with a very high sucess rate. When the anaesthetic fully  wears off in a couple of days time you will feel fine. Follow all the instructions on keeping dressing dry and subsequent wound care in time the scar left will fade away. Take care of your skin by using factor 50 suncream hats avoiding midday sun etc or you may get further lesions. Wishing you the best.

  • Many thanks for you reply Ed much appreciated

  • Hi, sorry to hear you're anxious but it's completely understandable.

I have just been told I have a basel cell carcinoma and im still in shock because it feels like it grows every day and I've only had it a few months. Did they measure yours and can you tell me what size it is please?

It sounds like you got your surgery really quickly. I hope it all goes well for you.

  • Hello yes they measured mine it was 11mm I’m not long up fro theatre and having to stay in hospital over night the surgery went ok and the stitches are quite neat too thanks for your kind wishes x

  • Hi Jenny

im so pleased the surgery went well for you. Neat dtitches are always a bonus. They're keeping you overnight then? That's good. It's really good to know you're positive about it all.

What Hospital did the surgery for you?

Mine measured 1x1 cm. Bit worried as it does seem to grow before my very eyes! Im looking to go private because the waiting list in the South is really long. But even private clinics are weeks and months.

I grew up in the era when cancer was feared and I think my anxiety is due to the horrors of being told awful stories!

Keep in touch, I  would love to hear how you heal
