Dad diagnosed with cancer in A&E last night. What will happen next?

My 78yr old dad was sadly diagnosed with cancer in A&E last night. Lung, spine, ribs and Glands. They havent given him any further information or plan yet.

What can we expect the next steps to be?

We are all so shocked and worried.

Has anyone got any experience of cancer which has spread in an 78yr old where they were offered chemotherapy etc... im so worried the doctors won't offer treatment.

Any advice or guidance welcome.

Thanks.

  • Hi Mrsea,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm very sorry to hear of the situation with your dad - I can understand this must have been a big shock and I'm sure it's a lot to try to process, particularly as it sounds like you may not have much information yet.

It's difficult to advise on next steps - usually you would have been given some idea of what to potentially expect next, with regards to appointments. It's possible further tests could be needed, or otherwise there should be an appointment where they give you all the information and any options.

If you don't feel you have any idea of next steps, it might be worth trying to get in touch with your dad's doctor.

In the meantime, hopefully you'll get more replies from others here, particularly if others with similar experience see your post.

We are always here for support if you need it and I hope that the forum can be useful for you.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
