Coping with the wait for results

Hi, I attended A&E due to intense stomach pain, unfortunately a CT scan showed a tumour in my bowel. I had emergency surgery to remove the tumour & 30cm of my bowel. I’m recovering at home now from the surgery & waiting for the histology results.

My question is how do people cope with this waiting period? I find I’m checking my phone constantly & going to bed every night terrified that tomorrow will be the day I’ll find out.

Any suggestions for this bit? Thank you so much xx

  • Waiting for results is horrible! I found distraction quite useful - favourite TV programmes , coffee with friends etc.  Also I thought about the worse case scenario ie that there was cancer still present and about how much can be done in terms of treatment.  I also surprised myself about how much I was able to cope with and I'm sure you will feel the same...Try not to panic - cancer isn't always the horrific experience it was say 30 years ago...

  • Thank you so much, that’s really helpful. You’re right, treatment is so much better today than 5, 10 or 30 years ago xx
