Recently diagnosed with breast cancer

Iv recently been diagnosed with breast cancer at 38 years old and I'm really struggling to come to terms with it. I'm getting really bad anxiety from knowing I have cancer and it's keeping me awake most nights I am due to start chemo soon but with the hospitals going on strike its made my anxiety worse not knowing if my appointments will get cancelled I have a really good partner and daughter to talk to but not alot of family I have friends that are supportive but doesn't really know what I'm going through as haven't had or going through cancer so I haven't really got alot of people to talk to

  • Probably best not to look at dr Google  just stay in this forum and ask whatever you need to know from real people who understand, I know also that most of my family and friends can’t possibly understand how much it hits us ., I get answers and help  from here

  • Did you lose your hair ?

  • McMillan cancer support is out there for everyone, I went Friday and they were fantastic, the hospital arranged it and they take calls whenever you need ..

  • Yes I did. I start loosing little by little since week 2 until it become so much in week 4 and I decided to shave it of. It was a relief I can say. Better get rid of it than watch yourself slowly loosing hair every day and end up with few you have left on your head.

  • Yes you are right and I will continue to seek advice from here I hope you are also able to find hope and strength from this group .We all need someone who is in similar circumstances to listen and discuss certain situations.with us.sending healing thoughts to everyone

  • How was the side effects of chemo for you this is one of my biggest fears I'm so scared

  • I had nausea for first 3 days after intravenous infusion almost every time. I took pills to manage it for 3 days in first 4 rounds(cycles). Second half of treatment with EC was 1 day nausea after treatment day only.

Had liver toxicity at cycle 2 once I needed 2 weeks to recover and my treatment was delayed for 3 weeks.

Had skin rash quite bad on my back and tummy, face in first half of chemo treatment

Had diarrhoea once in the start as well

overall I felt week. Once almost collapsed in the shop due to low blood pressure.

second half of treatment was more hard emotionally and pain in muscles, joints
due to lack of moving in recent months all my body is stiff now and I have joint and muscle pain this is side effects which may last up to a year after treatment ends. I am now on immunotherapy 1 of 5 done.

i can mention brain fog, difficulty to concentrate, under active thyroid. This is what I remember.

  • Thank you so much for sharing this information it really does help when someone else has already ran the course although I know we may have different side effects but what you had seems to be the common ones .well done for pushing through .

  • Ieeveryone reacts differently to chemo but my personal experience was that it was by no means the horror story you hear about in the press.  They gave me various medications to counteract any side effects I might have.  They proved v successful and I certainly didn't feel sick, which was the main thing I was worried about.  I did feel tired at times but I didn't exactly feel unwell and I just rested up.  I wore the cold cap - a v Marmite experience for people, but I found it ok - so I didn't lose all my hair.

One to one counselling or the CRC helpline might help.  Good luck.
