Newly diagnosed

I have been diagnosed as having Squamish cell carcinoma Locally advanced in my larynx it's detained and hasn't spread anywhere else I'm considering my choices of treatment I feel that having my voice box removed in the first instance is pretty radical compared to other treatments that are said to be available like radiotherapy / Chemoradiotherapy ...and partial removal of the effect vocal chords I'm wondering if anyone else has been faced with making this decision whilst confused with lack of understanding that is impacting on my choice of treatment.. I think they would be happy to just totally remove rather than go through with other choices

  • Hello Shellers

I'm sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma that is in your larynx. Whilst it's positive to hear that it's contained and hasn't spread anywhere else, it's understandable that you're feeling overwhelmed by this news and the treatment options that have been recommended.

We have some information about laryngeal cancer on our website that may be a helpful reference for you. I'm not sure that we have any members who have had their voice box removed but we do have members who have been through chemoradiation fo various types of throat and head and neck cancers. You can read through some of their posts in this thread

You might also find it helpful to talk things through with one of our team of nurses. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040. If you've been given contact details for a specialist nurse at the hospital then you can also ring them to chat through some of your questions and concerns.

Whatever treatment route you decide to follow Shellers I hope that you're well supported by family and friends and that things progress as smoothly as possible for you.

    Sending my best wishes,
