Radiotherapy for prostate cancer

I've just had my first radiotherapy treatment for prostate cancer and 12 hours later experienced urinary retention requiring a trip to A&E for a catheter. I have 4 more sessions of radiotherapy to go. I wonder how long the catheter will need to be on place.

Any help or advice gratefully received.

  • Welcome to the Cancer Chat community GilesB, although I'm really sorry to hear what happened after your first radiotherapy session.

That must have been very scary, but I'm glad the issue has been resolved and I hope you're getting on o.k with your catheter.

You can find out more about radiotherapy for prostate cancer on our website but in regards to query about the catheter I would suggest giving our team of cancer nurses a call. They're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and with their knowledge and insightful they will do all they can to answer your questions and address any other concerns you may have about your treatment at this time.

We do have quite a few prostate cancer members on the forum at the moment, so hopefully some of them will stop by soon to share their experiences and advice.

We're thinking of you GilesB, and wishing you all the best with your other 4 sessions of radiotherapy.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
