Incidental gallbladder cancer.

I had my gallbladder  bladder  removed beginning  of zapril after acute pancreatitis.  Got a phone call out of the blue yesterday  from my surgeon  who told me that histology  shows cancer. She was very surprised  as MRI,ERP,and even the operation  had not shown any evidence at the time. They have had a MDT meeting  and are arranging urgent tests and have been referred  to hepatic team at Southampton  ( out of my area, live in Bournemouth  ). Have no symptoms  apart from very occasional  short lived nausea but have recently  started getting  spontaneous  nose bleeds.

  • Hi FlorenceH,

I'm so sorry you are going through this. I don't have experience of gallbladder cancer (I'm a melanoma patient), however I can empathise as to your acute pancreatitis and gallbladder surgery.

I had my badly infected gallbladder removed in 2020. After again suffering from pain a year later they found a stone stuck in my bile duct after having a MRCP. It was removed by ERCP at the end of December 2021 & it sadly caused acute pancreatitis and pneumonia, culminating in a 3 week hospital stay. During 2022 I had 2 further 7 day hospital stays due to infections, I lost 4 stone & half my hair but I thankfully began to recover by the late summer. It did worry me that my melanoma may have spread to my gallbladder so I always insisted on being told, at each scan result appointment, if there was any sign of cancer - thankfully I was lucky.

I hope someone comes along who has personal experience of gall bladder cancer - it's always good to talk to others who can share their support. If you haven't already done so, use the search bar at the top of the page to search for gall bladder - you may find some earlier posts that will help. The fact your cancer wasn't visible on the scans etc is hopefully a good sign that it was very small & has been caught early. Meanwhile, I wish you all the best with the treatment they decide on & if you want to chat about anything, just send me a friend request. Take care,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)

  • Thank you Angie,I really appreciate  that you took the  time  to  reply, especially  as it isn't  a cancer you are familiar  with. My goodness  though, you certainly  have  endured some difficult times. Thank you also for your positive  thoughts, really  helpful.  I have found some info on this subject on MacMillan Cancer which was interesting.  As everyone  says, now comes  the  hardest bit,the waiting for the tests and then the results. The sensible thing I guess is to wait until  I have all the info and then put on my big girls  knickers and deal with  it.!! In the meantime  I wish you all the best.
