Just been diagnosed with breast cancer

Hi, i was diagnosed with breast cancer yesterday and i’m waiting for my biopsy to come back. I have an appointment on Thursday when i will be told what it is and a plan.

Any advice on what questions to ask? I really don’t know much about Cancer because nobody i know has had it.

Also i know i need to start looking after myself to fight it. My diet is awful at the moment, any tips?

  • Hi Picks,

Welcome to Cancer Chat, although I'm sorry to hear of your situation and I hope you're getting on as OK as can be. It's good to hear you don't have long to wait for your appointment.

You may want to ask about timescales, i.e. how long to wait to start any treatment and how long treatment may take. Plus what to expect with that treatment, for example any side effects. Depending on what they tell you, you may also want to ask more about the diagnosis, for example if you feel you'd like more information about it.

You may also want to ask some logistical questions, such as where to go for treatment, how often, and how long appointments may take.

Be sure to jot down your questions, as well as the information you get at the appointment, to help you remember.

You can of course also ask about your diet as well, as I'm sure they'll be able to offer some recommendations for this. We have some information on our website about eating a healthy diet, in case this is helpful.

In the meantime, hopefully you'll get some more replies from others on the forum soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

  • Thank you, i will start a list of questions. Hopefully they will start with treatment soon. Many thanks

  • Hi Picks

It's difficult to go in with a pre-list of questions when one doesn't know the stage, grade, type of breast cancer etc.

My first consultation was focused (by my surgeon) on how it was going to be treated and my surgical options. I was then given a week to decide what I wanted. I found talking to my GP really helpful as he had the clinical knowledge and clarity to help me decide.

I only started asking questions (I brought a list) in my 2nd consultation.. once I had all the facts.

Therefore, take a breath and go with the process, it's difficult enough without trying to preempt any consultations. It's the clinical team's job to ensure you have all the information you need.

    Take care x
