Newly diagnosed: GOJ cancer

Hi. I've just been diagnosed last Thursday with oesophageal cancer at the goj part after a gastroscopy.  I've had a CT scan and waiting on a pet scan.  I've only had a 10 minute meeting with the consultant who told me it was cancer, he said they think they can treat it with surgery and to cancel any plans over the next month or so. I then got a call from a different person who said they would make decision on treatment after pet scan.  I'm just wondering what others experiences have been?  Does the pet scan show if it's spread (first consultant told me it looked clear on the CT but it was only chest/abdomen and pelvis scan)No-one has mentioned chemo before surgery so I'm wondering if this is usually something they do?.  I am planning on phoning them to discuss later this week but just wondering what others experiences were? Thanks.

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat, KcK1.

I’m sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis, it’s a lot to take in, especially when information is coming from different people and there are still so many unknowns.

It’s good to hear that your CT scan didn’t show anything concerning in the areas they looked at.

It might a good idea to give your medical team a ring, especially if you’ve got questions about what to expect and what support is available. In the meantime, I hope you’ll find it helpful to hear from other members who’ve been through similar situations - you’re not alone, and this is a very supportive space.

If you ever feel like it might help to talk things through with someone, our nurses are here for you, too. You can call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. They’re really knowledgeable and easy to talk to.

Wishing you all the best as you wait for your next scan and the treatment plan to come together.

    Take care,
    Renata
