Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Where do I start.  Last week my consultant broke the news of SCC to me. Thought I had misheard her. How do I feel or how should I feel. My emotions are all over the place.  "Oh you'll be fine" everyone tells me.   Tell that to my brain when I live alone and already an overthinker.  I hate the word cancer and its seriously keeping me from sleeping, socialising and its only been a week!  It bleeds regularly.   Is the common?  So so many questions.  I know there are people a lot worse off than me and I send my  love to you all.  Hopefully my surgery will be done reasonably quickly

  • Hi Anne

    1. If this is SCC of the skin your outlook is very good after surgery. Bleeding of the lesion is common keep a look out for infection and tell your GP as soon as possible if it does become infected. Most people recover very well and provided you look after your skin by avoiding sun and use factor 50 suncream you may never get another. My first was 35 years ago and although Im not doing too well now due to severe skin damage in the tropics as a child  Ive had a good run. All the best for getting your op quickly

  • Thank you so much for your reply Ed.  I appreciate you sharing your experience.   I think the initial shock and the fact I live alone is playing havoc with my mindset.  Take care of yourself Ed.

  • Hi Anne,

I get the initial shock and the word cancer sends shivers so understand. On the positive side I was diagnosed with this on my throat 2018, and after treatment have no side effects, and lead totally normal life. Sometimes just a blip in life but so advanced now with treatment. Message me if you would find helpful as you are not alone

  • Hi sorry to trouble you, but are you the gentleman I think from Scotland?, when I got diagnosed in 2021 with throat cancer I read yours and a lady called Hazels day to day update on your journey, it was very helpful I’d now like to pass it on to someone who’s been diagnosed but can’t find it , apologies if I have the wrong person.
