Having to wait 3 and a half week for biopsy results despite being told I have breast cancer. Is this normal?

Hello there, on Saturday 5th April,  I went to the Breast Clinic after I was referred after finding a lump. I’ve had a feeling from the day I felt it something was off my gut was telling me. After having a mammogram the doctor wanted more images and 3d images aswell. Then I went to have an ultrasound as they wanted to biopsy the whole area as the mammogram showed a suspicious lump as well as lots of specked calcifications but they couldn’t get the image clear enough as apparently I’m still young (40) and my breast tissue was dense so they then booked me for a mammogram guided biopsy on the Monday. On that Saturday two different doctors spoke to me and said they are very concerned and that’s it very suspicious on the scale 1-5 I’m a 4. They did say it was contained,  would defo have surgery and couldn’t see anything in my armpits so that’s a positive. however ive been given 30th april to get the results which is 3.5 weeks away? Is this normal? Seems such a long wait to receive the answer we know already. I just want a plan in place I’ve got no idea what my life will look like over the next few months and it’s driving me insane. I have 3 children to care for. Any support would be greatly appreciated it.

  • Hello LeighG

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently had a breast biopsy and have been told that it's likely you have breast cancer. Understandably, this is a very anxious time for you, and I know many of the community members here will be able to empathise with how difficult it can be waiting for results.

It's not uncommon to have to wait a few weeks for an appointment after a biopsy. It's possible that the breast team will want to wait for your results to come back and then to discuss your case at an MDT before meeting with you to discuss their findings and a treatment plan if necessary.

I wonder I you might find it helpful to talk things through with one of our nurses while you're waiting for your results. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can. They're available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

I hope that when you see the specialist on the 30th that they can give you the answers and reassurance you need. Keep in touch LeighG, and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi LeighG

I was in the same position as you recently.  I was diagnosed with breast cancer and had biopsies taken on 4th March but did not get my results until 4th April.  My understanding is the HER2 results takes a while to come back.  For me the waiting time was horrible lots of what ifs.  Hope everything goes ok for you.

  • The waiting is horrible as just want to get on with it now. How are you feeling? Are you having surgery and treatment? Hope all goes ok for you xxx
