Fibroadenoma grown over 2 years

Hi there,

Around two years ago in March 2023 I found a mobile, firm and smooth lump in the upper outer quadrant of my right breast

After many many weeks of waiting I eventually had a core biopsy, around 3 punctures were made, they stated the ultrasound was slightly abnormal (dense breast tissue) and hence the biopsy at the age of 22/23

Anyways, a few weeks later the doctors called me and confirmed it was a fibroadenoma, they said it doesn't turn into cancer (I know online there is a low risk) and said I can consider getting it removed if it grew.

Fast forward two years, its grown quite a bit, I no longer need to push hard and search for the lump, if i palm my breast i can feel it easily and it's probably just smaller than half of a hard boiled egg. And I can easily feel it if i just apply the tiniest bit of pressure (again, dense and fairly large breasts)

Its still smooth, still highly mobile and only is tender if i've been pushing on it (I know, silly me) or if i've slept on that side or have laid on that side on a harder surface/leaned on sofa arm for example it can be tender, I don't have the most perky breasts either, so the weight can make them tender if i'm not wearing a bra.

The doctors never actually confirmed the size originally, i'd say from a feel it was originally around 1.5 cm, its probably between 4-6 cm now though, maybe slightly larger

Is this a cause for concern? I'd say it **hasn't** grown at all in the last 6-8 months, I go through periods where I avoid touching it and sometimes I hyper fixate on it

And obviously my mind is now pondering, could it have been a phyllodes tumor or am I being silly considering it's grown -fairly- slowly and hasn't grown recently, it doesn't show any signs of shrinking though. I have no other symptoms or changes

As far as hormones go, i've been on the implant since I was 16, so around 10 years consistently, and over the last 2 years i've had a few courses of 3 month long pill prescribed due to my menstrual cycle being very random (sometimes I don't come on for 6 months, sometimes i come on for a month at a time) and I know hormones can cause it to grow, so was wondering if this could've essentially fed it leading to it growing? It doesn't seem to have grown at all since I stopped the pill. I still am on the implant though.

Can anyone confirm whether they've had similar growth? With the state of the NHS i'm not really wanting to get it checked out again, waiting last time did a number on my mental health and of the day of my biopsy I was waiting in the waiting room for 10 hours as they were behind as had to biopsy every person that went in :(

I'm 26 now for context!

Thanks so much in advance!

  • To confirm, I was on the progesterone only pill

  • Hello Justnervouswreck

I'm sorry to hear that you're feeling so anxious about the fibroadenoma that you were previously diagnosed with and that you have some concerns about the fact it's grown.

You've mentioned that you don't want to go back to the breast clinic to get this checked. You could however make an appointment with your GP to get it checked and ask for some advice and reassurance.

There is also some good information about fibroadenomas on the Breast Cancer Now website. If you think it might help to talk things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040. I'm sure they will be happy to listen and offer any advice and support they can.

    Best wishes,
