Day one thoughts...

So... Past few months whilst showering had thought "ooh, that feels different." Kept checking and not actually feeling any lumps on/in my boob but felt more like on the ribcage where my boob meets my ribs. Checking other (left) side couldn't work out if it felt the same. Eventually made a GP/nurse appointment (about 10 days ago). Nurse had a feel and I could tell she thought it was chest wall muscle which she openly said. She then said "how much is it on your mind?", I said that it was niggling.... and although I thought it was probably muscle/nothing I would be kicking myself if I didn't get it checked out and left it to "grow". She agreed and did the referral.

Today I attended the breast clinic with my husband. Several hours, regular mammogram then 3D mammogram and ultrasound followed. Something concerning seen clearly which led to biopsy on the sus breast tissue AND the concerning "chubby" lymth nodes nearby. Neither location is where I was concerned about (same right breast tho). No pain (prior to today's shenanigans) and I feel perfectly healthy. I'm generally healthy, no regular medication and not a whinger/moaner.

Day ended back with the consultant who first saw me (I know he couldn't feel/see anything on the initial examination). Told that although we need to wait for the results (of biopsy) it is clear that further treatment (mentioned surgery and/or chemo) would be necessary.

I now have to wait a whole week to find out what the situation is and the way forward... I feel physically fine but not sure I'll get much sleep this next week. Was reassured by the lovely nurses we engaged with today, and the consultant, that treatments etc have come on leaps and bounds even in just the last few years. But still didn't stop the tears from the fear and shock of it all.

Would appreciate any advice on similar experiences and how to get through this next week without driving myself crazy....

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat, Humptybumpty
Thank you for sharing your story with us. I can only imagine how difficult and unsettling this waiting period must be for you, especially with everything happening so quickly. It’s completely understandable to feel a range of emotions, from fear and uncertainty to relief that you’ve been proactive in getting things checked.
It’s great to hear that you’ve had the support of the nurses and consultant throughout this process, and I hope their reassurances about the advancements in treatment bring some comfort. While waiting for results can feel unbearable, try to remember that you’ve already taken an important step by getting checked and staying on top of things.
As for coping through the waiting period, it might help to keep your mind occupied with things that bring you peace, whether that’s talking with loved ones, doing something you enjoy, or even focusing on self-care practices that help you relax. Everyone experiences this waiting phase differently, but connecting with others who understand can be really helpful. You might find some comfort in reading other people’s stories or even in our forum, where others are sharing their experiences with the same feelings of waiting.
If you ever need to chat, please know that we’re here to support you, and if you’d like to talk with one of our nurses, they’re available on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.
Sending you strength during this tough time, and I hope the next week passes as smoothly as possible.

  • Thank you Renata. I am getting some comfort from reading others stories. Only 2 more days to get through before my next appointment and some clarity on the way forward.
