Soft Food Diet

My husband has been newly diagnosed with what we originally thought was oesphagael cancer to find out it is actually stomach cancer.  We are devasted with this news and are awaiting a PET scan before a treatment plan will be talked about.    It seems since he's had the diagnosis he just doesn't want to eat because the fear of the food getting stuck is worse for him than before he knew about it because of where the tumor is. We are waiting on a referral from a dietitian but in the meantime everything I'm suggesting he's just not into.  I'm so worried he's loosing too much weight and won't be strong enough for potential operation/chemo.      Just needed to write this for any suggestions for foods ive not thought about/seen on the internet that anyone may have found themselves enjoying that they didn't previously.  thanks

  • Welcome to the forum, Rosieb1866.
I’m sorry to hear about your husband's recent diagnosis – it must be an incredibly difficult time for both of you.
It’s easy to understand your worries about him not wanting to eat and losing weight, especially as it can be challenging to find foods that feel manageable when swallowing is a concern.
While you’re awaiting a referral to the dietitian, you might find it helpful to explore some suggestions on managing a soft food diet. We have a helpful page on our website called  Soft Food Diet that offers some practical advice on meals that are easier to eat, particularly for people with swallowing difficulties, it also covers ideas for meals that might be less daunting for him to try and could help prevent further weight loss while still providing nourishment.
In the meantime, if you’d like to speak with one of our nurses, you can reach them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. They’re always happy to help.
With best wishes to you and your husband,
