Double mastectomy but tumor still there

I have recently posted about my diagnosis. I am 40 years old and this is my second time to have breast cancer.

I underwent a double mastectomy nearly three weeks ago and healing well. Last Monday I met my consultant who was happy with everything and said lymph nodes were all all margins were clear. Delighted.

I mentioned that the lump is found was still there. He checked it and said he was happy it was scary tissue.

Fast forward three days and a phone call from the hospital asking me up for an ultrasound on the lump.

Scan showed that the cancer is still there and I now have to undergo more surgery.

My head is everywhere and I just don't understand how I can me told all testing went well and they are happy they removed everything and margins were clear when on fact none of it is removed at all!!!

Just so shocked, angry and upset.

Thanks for listening and replying if you can

  • Hello Rehab2

I'm so sorry to hear that after your recent surgery, you were asked to go for further tests and then told that not all the cancer had been removed. This must have been particularly hard to hear after you'd been told days earlier that all the margins were clear. It's understandable that you're feeling angry and upset by the situation you now find yourself in.

I'd really encourage you to talk with your breast care nurse and specialist and let them know how you're feeling and the concerns that you have. Hopefully, they will be able to offer an explanation that will give you some answers and reassurance as you go ahead with the additional surgery.

If it would help to talk things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to give them a call. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Keep in touch Rehab2 and let us know how you're doing. We're here for you.

    Best wishes,
