New diagnosis of lung cancer after finishing treatment for tonsil cancer

I was wondering if anyone can help. My uncle (more big brother) was told that he had tonsil cancer. Been through treatment and had a PET scan and a consultation last week. He’s been told that he now had lung cancer. He’s said it’s not curable but is manageable. He’s going to start chemo. I guess I’m asking what type of timescale are we looking at? What happens next? Xx

  • Hello Claireloub85

I'm so sorry to hear all that your uncle has been through. I know from the many posts I've read here on the forum that treatment for tonsil cancer can be particularly harsh for many people so I hope that he has recovered well from that treatment regime.

It must have been hard for you all to hear the news that he now has lung cancer which is manageable but not curable. The treatment that your uncle has for this cancer will depend on whether this is a new diagnosis of lung cancer or if the lung cancer has spread from his original tonsil cancer. There will be a lot of questions that at the moment the specialists may not be able to answer at the moment, such as a timescale. Hopefully, he will have a good response to the new chemotherapy he's due to start and when he next has a check-up the team will be able to offer you all some reassurance.

In the meantime, if you'd like to talk things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can.

Sending you both my best wishes,
