Mum Diagnosed with Bowel Cancer at 91

Mum has just been diagnosed with bowel cancer at the age of 91. Treatment has not yet been decided on. None of the family live locally. She's still in hospital at the moment. Worried where we go from here.

  • Hi Aconites25,

A big welcome to our forum and I am so sorry to hear about your mum's bowel cancer diagnosis at the age of 91. I can imagine they are having to think carefully about what treatment she can have due to her age. It must be hard to know what to do given that none of the family lives locally at the moment and you must be worried about what happens when she comes out of hospital.

I think it would be a good idea to have an in-depth conversation with her medical team to see what they advise and suggest with regards to her care and what the next steps might be. It must be hard for you to plan anything at the moment given that treatment has not yet been decided but perhaps you will be able to think more clearly once a treatment plan has been agreed on.

I would also suggest you give our cancer nurses a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm so don't hesitate to get in touch with them to talk things through and explain your mum's situation.

I will now let our community members say hello as they may have encountered a similar situation and will hopefully have some good suggestions for you based on their personal experiences.

    Best wishes,
