Liver mets following surgery for Ovarian cancer

I had surgery CRS and HIPEC  for ovarian cancer.

In just 4 months and just before I start treatment  Carboplatin and Pacitaxol  a CT scan shows liver metastases ( 5 very small) my oncologist tells me in meeting yesterday thar my OS is 6 - 12 months with just the chemo,  and  18 months with Avastin ( immunotherapy) added at month 2 and continuing until it stops working or I feel I've had enough!

I am was told I wasn't a good candidate for liver surgery as the mets are diffuse in my liver. But no other options were offered. Eg TACE

However I've also been told my case will be discussed at liver MDT next week.

Does anyone else have this dx or similar?

  • A very warm welcome to the Cancer Chat community Katycheek although I'm sorry about the liver mets that have been found on your CT scan.

This must have been very difficult to find out but our members are here for you and hopefully some of them will stop by soon to offer their support and share their experiences and advice.

If you'd like to discuss your situation further with one of our cancer nurses, they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very easy to talk to and will do all they can to help you at this time.

We're thinking of you Katycheek and hope for a good outcome at the liver MDT meeting next week.

    Kind regards,

  • My wife had been given exactly this same prognosis last year where she had to rely on the chemotherapy and the immunotherapy treatment. She was not offered any form of surgery including hysterectomy, ootherectomy or HIPEC as the cancer doctor had advised that this would not change the long term outcome.

Her oncology doctor had told her that given that the chemo goes directly into the blood stream that it will kill the cancer that is present on or in the liver given that this organ does filter a lot of blood (or anywhere else in the body for that matter). She had a recent CT scan and although the cancer has come back in her peritoneum, there was no evidence that it had returned to the liver. Unfortunately, she has had the return of the cancer after 6 months of stopping treatment and will start a second phase of chemotherapy later this month using Carboplatin again along with Gemcitabine before being put on a PARP inhibitor. She is back in hospital at the moment having issues with the return of ascites but has not had any other symptoms.

Remember that Paclitaxol stops the cancer cells dividing, Carboplatin destroys the DNA that forms the cancer in the first place and Bevacizumab (Avastin) captures a protein called VEGF and this is supposed to prevent new blood vessels forming on any new cancer sites. All these cancer drugs cause cancer cells to die off in one form or another.
