Too fat for surgery

Diagnosed with bowel cancer in December 2024. Had first appointment with colorectal surgeon on NYE and discussed plan for chemo, ozempic to aid weight loss and then surgery when lost enough weight. Had first appointment with oncologist last week and was told if I cant have surgery then what's the point putting me through chemo? We told her that the surgeon didnt discuss anything else.

I came away from that appointment feeling like I was being left to die with no treatment.

  • Hello Mrs_Grinch

I'm sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis of bowel cancer and the difficulties that are complicating your treatment plan.

It sounds like the appointment with the oncologist last week wasn't as straightforward as you were expecting it to be given that the colorectal surgeon has talked about surgery being a possibility once you have lost enough wait.

I'd suggest getting in touch with the hospital PALS team. It's part of their role to help resolve concerns or problems when you're using the NHS. You could also get in touch with the colorectal surgeon's secretary to let them know what was said at the oncology appointment and explain your concerns.

If you'd like to talk with one of our nurses for some advice and support you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

I do hope that you can get some clear answers about the best way forward with your treatment plan soon.

    Best wishes,
