Pet Scans

My Mum has suspected lung cancer. She is already frail and has  dementia. I’ve been told by the Dr. in the lung Dept. That the surgeons would rule out biopsy and surgery due to her age and fragility and he said the same reasons would be given by the oncologist for not doing chemo. He did mention that if we did want to know if it is cancer for sure then they could arrange a PET scan. If they are saying that they can do anything to treat the suspected cancer, would there be any point in having the PET scan? Would a confirmed diagnosis help with any future treatment e.g. pain meds.

  • Hi BGB,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to hear of the situation with your Mum - I hope you are getting on OK.

It would be good to talk through your question with your Mum's doctor when you get the opportunity, as they will be best placed to advise on what it might mean with regards to supporting her.

Obviously there is the issue of having further understanding as well, were you to get this information, which may be a factor.

You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of our nurses who may be able to provide some additional info for you. If you'd like to do this, you can reach them on freephone 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
