Kidney Cancer

I have been diagnosed with stage 2 kidney cancer on 23rd December. I’m a reasonably fit 86 year old male. The surgeon is quite willing to operate and it is up to my to decide. He suggested a further scan in January to see if it had grown, and the decide what I wish to do. I feel I would like to have the operation but wonder what the after affects would be.  Quite depressed in making the decision.

  • Hello Botoph and a very warm welcome to our forum,

I am so sorry you were diagnosed with kidney cancer and I can imagine it was a bit of a strange Christmas and new year as a result from you finding out the day before Christmas. It's a difficult decision to have to make and it is important that you get all the information you need so you can make an informed decision. Our website has detailed information on kidney cancer you might wish to have a look as well at our section on treatment for kidney cancer and I would suggest you have a look in particular at our page on surgery for kidney cancer . You will find out more there on what happens after kidney cancer surgery and possible problems after kidney cancer surgery

I think it's a good idea to do what your surgeon suggested, to have a scan in January to see if it has grown and then make a decision based on the results of the scan. Don't hesitate to ask your specialist any question that comes to your mind in the lead up to the scan and also after you have had your scan results. They are the true experts and will be able to guide you.

I hope that you will hear from other members of our community who have been diagnosed with kidney cancer and have faced similar tough decisions regarding the operation or who may have had the operation before and if you would like to talk to one of our cancer nurses and get their advice on anything, you can ring them on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm (but closed today on the 1st of January). They are very friendly and helpful so don't hesitate to pick up the phone at any time!

Wishing you a very happy new year 2025 and that you manage to reach the best possible decision on what to do. Give us an update from time to time if you don't mind on how you get on and what the scan in January highlights.
