Newly diagnosed with breast cancer

I am having a lumpectomy and need a radioactive tracer put in my breast which I'm worried about. Also I'm going to have a blue dye injected into me. I'm a fainter and know I'll pass-out during this procedure.  I'm very anxious. Does anyone have any advice or comfort to give please?

  • Hi KittyCarmichael,

A very warm welcome to our forum. I am sorry to hear how worried you feel about. I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer and I never even noticed the tracer being inserted, until I was told that it had been after the procedure. |It is normal process for most of us to get these inserted, as it helps your surgeon to pinpoint the exact position of your tumour. The blue dye is very straightforward, so I'm sure that you'll be fine.

Make sure that your consultant knows that you are a fainter though, as this will give him/her the heads-up and they can be prepared, just in case. Do you have a date for surgery yet?

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

  • Hello Jolamine

Thanks for replying, yes I'm extremely anxious. I know nothing about cancer, I've no friends or relatives who've been through it. Been a bit of a shock. Also, I'll tell the consultant that I'm a fainter.

  • Hi Kitty,

This is one of the most worrying stages of our cancer journey, when there are so many unknowns. Unfortunately, you will get to know more about cancer as you travel this journey. I lost my mum and other relatives to this disease, but it still came as a shock, even though I felt that I was prepared for the news.

Diagnosis, treatment and after care have all improved so much since Mum had it and there was just no comparison between the care that we both had. I am now 14 years down the line from my first diagnosis and I still lead a busy and fulfilling life.

There is no question that you cannot ask your care team. You will probably find it useful to write down any questions you have and take this with you to your appointments. You will get a lot of support and advice on this site as you travel your journey.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi sorry to jump in on this. I to is newly diagnosed  and having a mat seed I think it is. . Is the same  thing. I am having surgery  in January.  I quite scared as I hate hospitals.

  • Hi Harry,

A very warm welcome to our forum, although I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis. The mag seed is inserted in the breast next to any lesion that is found. We all get these inserted, as they will help your surgeon to locate the cancer in your breast, when it comes to your surgery. Do you know what type of breast cancer you have, or what type of surgery is planned? I can understand your fear of hospitals. You will find that the staff at these clinics are usually very helpful and understanding. The surgery is very straightforward.

I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer within a year of one another. First time I has a lumpectomy and I had a double mastectomy for the second bout. That was all 15 years ago now and I still lead a busy and fulfilling life - hopefully you will too.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you . Glad your doing so well.  Mine is stage 1 . The surgeon  said it very small and slow growing xx

  • Hi Harry,

My diagnosis is just like yours, diagnosed a week ago with stage 1. I'm having the magseed put in next week & the lumpectomy 2 wks later. I feel fine, very positive about it as it's been caught so early. Just a little anxious to know if my lymph nodes will be clear.

    Best wishes,

    Lisann

  • Hi Lisann.  I am having mine fitted on through 3rd of January. It's just knock me for six. Have you already started tablets . I know there will be lifestyle changes. I have to pack up smoking which won't be a bad thing but I do like a glass or 2 of wine .  Hope all is clear. I have op about the 22nd which is scaring me

    Jo

  • Hi Jo,

So magseed date is 2nd Jan & then op on 15th. I don't think you usually start any tablets until after radiotherapy if that's the ones you mean? I know all tablets have different side effects so I'm glad I've lost 2 stone over the last 8 months (purposely) & am eating much more healthily. I don't drink much although I have just received 2 lovely bottles of gin for Christmas

My consultant told me the isotope injection is very painful so that sounds fun! Have you heard about that one?

  • Hi Jo,

I know that this diagnosis will have knocked you for six. Mine was stage 1 as well and it is about the best diagnosis you could get, particularly, when it is one of the less aggressive, slower growing types.

I was really scared about my lumpectomy too, but it all went very smoothly. Try to place your faith in your care team - they really do know what they're doing. I am not a doctor, but I suspect that you may still be fine with the odd glass of wine - I must confess, that I still have the occasional glass.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
