oesophagus and stomach cancer, in-operable please help with what food, juice can be taken to increase calories

Hi

My husband was diagnosed in November this year, he can't eat as he chokes, he is losing too much weight and they want to stop his chemo because of this, but he wants them to continue.   I have been told of Soupsop?  Any ideas please, it can't have lumps.

He is only 57 years old

  • Hello Lismick

I'm so sorry to hear about your husband's diagnosis and that he is struggling with his diet at the moment. It's understandable that this is a very difficult time for you both.

We do have information about soursop on our website. It is promoted as an alternative cancer treatment however it's really important to remember there is not enough reliable evidence that soursop works as a treatment for cancer and no reputable scientific cancer organisations support any of these claims.

What have the hospital team said about your husband's diet and his struggles with being able to take in enough calories? Has he been referred to a dietician or are there plans to try and improve this problem for him with other options?

We have some information on our website about eating problems with oesophageal cancer but if you'd like to talk with one of our nurses for some advice and support you can call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

I do hope that you and your husband can access the support he needs to improve things for him soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Hello Jenn

Thank you so much, yes the dietician is aware he can't eat, he is on forty sip drinks, he manages ice-cream and custard but is not putting the weight on which is why they want to stop Chemo.  I have started reading the link you gave me, some great idea's which I will definitely try.  Thank you so much Jenn.

  • My 39 year old husband has just been diagnosed with this cancer . Stage 4 inoperable and non curative . He hasn't started his chemo and hopefully immunotherapy yet.  We use soursop. He's managing a small glass a day at the moment . Along with some shakes x
