Not sure how to feel - waiting for breast biopsy results after small lump found during ultrasound

Hi all. I have recently had a biopsy of my breast and just waiting on the results. I was referred to the breast clinic after my routine mammogram was unclear. They took further mammograms and gave me an ultrasound and found a very small lump that I would never have found myself. They said that it was small, early and treatable as they are erring on the side that it is most likely the C word. My emotions are all over the place and it comes in waves. not really sure what to expect with what comes next.

  • Hi,

I'm so sorry to hear you are so worried. I really know how you feel and hope that it turns out to be nothing.

I found a lump 3 weeks ago and i remember feeling exactly how you describe. I anayslysed everything the doctor said and even down to body language and couldnt get of google!! One minute positive the next in tears.

Unfortunately mine turned out to be cancer but fortunately early stages and low grade. Honestly I felt like I had been hit by a train when I found out. I've since had the lump removed and meeting an oncologist on Friday to sort out radiotherapy.

Its all so quick my emotions are in complete waves too.

I really hope you get good news from the biopsy but if not at least it was found and is treatable xx

  • Hi

Thank you for your kind words. So sorry to hear that your turned out bad. I am expecting the same as they do kinda know by the look of things on the screen. (Hopefully they do have it wrong, but I doubt it). I hope the radiotherapy goes ok. Did they get the whole lot out with your lumpectomy and how big was it?? Sorry for all the questions. Thanks again xx

  • Thank you. I will let you know how I get on. Hopefully you won't have to wait too long for your radiotherapy. Yeah I hate using THAT word. As you say it's the waiting that's the worst. Positive thoughts all round for us both. Xxx

  • Right back at you with the positivity! Let me know when you hear. Got everything crossed for you xxx

  • Hi Worried 1969 and Lf2024,

I am glad that it sounds as if both of you have caught this early. Waiting for results is one of the hardest times of our cancer journey. It is a tremendous shock when you get a cancer diagnosis, although why it should be is irrational, when it affects 1 in 2 people. It is perfectly normal to find your emotions all over the place, to feel tearful, angry and at times, to feel as if this is happening to someone else. You will find that these feelings will settle down gradually, as you know what you are facing and begin your journey.

I hope that you both get your results soon and that everything remains as positive. I was diagnosed with 2 bouts of early, low grade breast cancer. That was 14 years ago and I still lead a busy and fulfilling life - I'm sure that you will too.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you Jolamine. Glad your ok now and it does help to know that someone has went through this and is now ok. Xxx

  • Hi LF2024

I have my appointment for Friday and I am really nervous. I was ok earlier when I received to call with the appointment but now the nerves are kicking in. Xxx

  • Hi LF2024

How was your radiotherapy appointment?? Xx

  • At least you haven't got long to wait, I hope your ok. My mind went into overload at that point. What time is your appointment? Are you going with someone? I went to all my appointments on my own but looking back I think it might have been better to take someone. I really hope it's nothing, let me know how you get on xx

My oncologist appointment was positive, he did say he will recommend I am tested for the BRCA gene because of my age and family history and now I feel like that's hanging over me! I want it done ASAP but I think it's a bit of a process? I'm waiting for a letter for the radiotherapy dates and they want to do a CT scan before Christmas so they can see what area to target but with only a couple of weeks to go and royal mail I'm worrying about that now!

I've since caught an awful cold and think I have cording from the surgery, I'm literally falling apart xxx

  • Hi

Yeah I have someone coming with me. It's at 10am. Hope you feel better soon and get rid of the cold. I would like to think they will know of the royal mail probs and perhaps phone you with an appointment. I have no family history of breast cancer. Yeah I know what you mean about things hanging over you. Hopefully it won't be too long. Xxxx

  • Thank you!! X

No history is another really big positive!! Glad your not going alone.

I'll be thinking of you at 10am on Friday. I bet your desperate to get it out of the way now. Try not to google trust me it just makes you feel worse xxx

  • Thank you. Yeah I found that out the hard way with Google. I wish it was today so it's over and done with. Xxx

  • I understand, I was even trying to google pictures of the lump on ultrasound that Id seen at a side view!! Its puts you down a rabbit hole!! I wanted the day to come quick but when it did I didn't want it to be the day if that makes sense! Its so hard.

I really hope it goes well tomorrow.

I've actually managed to get an appointment to discuss my BRCA test at the doctors tonight at 7.15!! xx

  • Thank you. I hope your appointment goes well tonight, that's good you got one quick.. let me know how it goes. Xxxx

  • Hey!

How did you get on? Hope your ok xx

  • Hey sorry. Yeah I have it but it is very low grade and very early. The consultant said I should make a full recovery. I have either to have a lumpectomy or a that and a breast reduction (got big boobs lol). I have to go back on Monday to let them know what I decide to do. Then after the op I will get radiotherapy and probs a tablet. Still feeling a bit strange but a bit relieved as well as i know what I am dealing with. She also said there is no sign of it in my lymph nodes but they always remove a couple to be 100% sure. Did you get that done too??. How did you get on at the Docs last night?? Xxxx

  • Thats the best news of bad news isnt it?!!! Im so glad its low grade and caught early. I had the exact same news and action plan!! Its all so positive!! Yes I had the lymph node test too, I think they do it as a precaution then another relief when you get the definite news that's ok!

The doctors was a waste of time, apparently they cant do it from there end so I have to talk to the consultant! Still haven't received the letters for the scan and radiotherapy dates yet so need to somehow chase that up!

It really is a strange feeling, everyone is relieved and happy which you are but then at the same time you still feel shocked your in the situation at all!!

    Hope your ok xxxx

  • Yeah that's exactly how I feel too, strange isn't it. They did say that if you get cancer the one that this is the best type to have. Doctors eh if you get an appointment then they can be useless hopefully you can get some answers soon then. Where about in the UK are you?? I am Paisley xxx

  • That's good, did they tell you what type it was? At first they said mine was DCIS but after the lumpectomy when i received the letter it said IDC with some remaining DCIS (hence the radio).

That's a shame, we could of been radio buds but I'm in Hertfordforshire! LOL Maybe when we are both C free we should meet up for a LARGE wine and unhealthy food! haha :) xxx

  • That sounds like a good plan re the food and wine. Lol xxx

  • Hi Worried,

I am so sorry to hear that it is cancer, but I am glad to hear that it is low grade and that you have caught it early. Have you decided what surgery you're going to opt for yet? It is always so difficult to decide when you don't have all of the facts to hand - You may find it helpful to write down a list of any questions you have. Take this to your appointment on Monday and ask any questions you need to. Did they say what type of breast cancer you have?

They usually remove a few lymph nodes at the time of surgery to ensure that the lymph nodes are clear, but it is reassuring that so far, they look clear.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
