Finding out my Dad has cancer

I’ve just found out my Dad (51), has been diagnosed with kidney cancer that has metastasised to his bones. My sister and I have travelled back home to be with my parents during this time. I was just wondering if anyone had any advice on how I can be helpful to them during this time. I feel completely useless, and my emotions are jumping all over the place.

  • Hi chlobee98

I don't know your dad but I imagine he will be worrying about you, your sister and your mum. Speaking as someone who has recently finished treatment the things I appreciated the most were hugs and practical stuff like cooking etc. The things that annoyed me even though I know people mean well were not having my feelings validated when they were stupid things which I knew were stupid but they were in my head and I didn't want don't be silly if that makes sense. Most importantly you are there which I'm 100% sure your dad will appreciate, there's no right or wrong just do what feels right to you. Sending hugs. Xx

  • Just be there, Chloe. It's what dad needs
