Need help understanding

In August I was taken to hospital with symptoms for appendicitis which was diagnosed as Diverticulitis. This infection never cleared and in September I was admitted to hospital. I was in for 2 and half months and ended up with a stoma on 24th October. After being discharged with ‘good blood results’ I went for a check on 19th Nov to be told that histology had found cancer cells whilst both consultant and surgeon saw no sign during my time in hospital. Told I have been told it is stage 4 as it has spread to my lungs. 

I feel like I have been given a death sentence and am so shocked that no one picked up on this sooner. I have an appointment to discuss the full results on Tuesday but have been left with the words “very serious but completely treatable’. 

Please can someone give me any reassurance?

    I'm sorry to hear about all that you've been dealing with over the past few months. It's understandable that you have been left with lots of unanswered questions and concerns for the future. 

    It's good to hear that you have an appointment with the specialists on Tuesday to discuss the situation and what the recommended next steps will be. If you'd like to talk with one of our nurses for some advice and support before that appointment you could call our team of nurses. I know they will be happy to offer any advice, information and support they can. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040. 

    If you have concerns about the treatment you've had at the hospital to date, and why this diagnosis wasn't picked up sooner, I'd suggest getting in touch with the hospital PALS team. It's part of their role to help resolve concerns or problems when you're using the NHS. 

    Undoubtedly there is lots of uncertainty at the moment Lorna278. Try to avoid searching the internet for information and answers at the moment as this will leave you feeling more anxious. Take things a day at a time and hopefully, you will have some answers on Tuesday.
