Could have had BCC for 10 years..?

Hi I saw a dermatologist yesterday after being referred by my go with a dark coloured mole. While I was there I also asked for them to take a look at a rough patch of skin on the side of my forehead which had recently bled after my hairdresser caught it as she was blow drying my hair. Straightaway said it was a BCC & also a smaller one the other side.. My gp had dismissed it as a skin wound that was healing. The mole turned out to be no problem. I have two major concerns about the BCCs - they have been there for I would say possibly up to 10 years if not longer.. always thought they were just areas of dry skin until the one bled . I was told they are slow growing & no one seemed concerned but that’s a long time  Would they have tried to get a sooner appointment if this was a concern? I’ve had several other miles checked out during this time - all ok - without even thinking to get these looked at..
. The skin on my nose also feels a bit rough in places & slightly red but I do tend to catch the sun on it however careful I am in summer even wearing spf 50. I am hoping surely this would have been noticed while looking at my forehead if this could possibly also be a BCC but it’s quite a lot of the skin on my nose that is like this. I’m also worried about facial surgery & scarring;  the larger of the two is 17mm (the other around 3mm) so have been given Aldara cream to try to shrink it. Can this ever completely get rid of it without needing surgery? Anyone any experience of this? I have a 6 month wait for surgery but it’s more the length of time I’ve already had these that is worrying me. Sorry for the long post!

  • Thanks so much and I hope all goes well for you and that you get your treatment soon x

  •    please keep asking /sharing if u need to. dont be alone ,we are all in this together. and we can relate as we are going through similar.

  • Thank you Jenny, I hope you keep posting so we know how your scar is settling x

  • Thanks bee that made me well up a little - really appreciate the support from you and Jenny Jee. Please keep posting too, I want to know about your results when they come back x

  • Hi Lulu, just to say thank you for starting this thread, and it’s so encouraging to hear your bcc is done and dusted with only a small scar - despite being there a long time.
Seems that is common for us bcc people … mine’s been at least 3 years but maybe 4 or 5, I did see the GP about it 18 months ago but he said it was dry skin. It is worrying thinking it’s been growing since then, not much on the surface but maybe drilling down. Anyway, so glad you had a good outcome.

  • Hello, hope you’re doing well. This week I was diagnosed with bcc on my nose and I’m petrified. I was wondering how you’re doing now?
    Many thanks

hi lou. sorry to hear this if u read back through the thread several people have logged their experiences and progress. but please ask if u need anything answered specifically

  • Hi, I am new on here. I was diagnosed with BCC over 12 mths ago via a biopsy. This was in Australia. I had to return to the UK on urgent family reasons. My Dr referred me 10 mths ago and I have been told that the waiting list is 2 years. Went back to my drs to see if it could be extradited to see if I can be seen sooner. I was also told by the Dr in the uk that after having the biopsy in Australia that the cells would be absorbed by my body and the cells would have died. I was a cat 1in Australia and withing 4 weeks I saw the plastic surgeon, as it is on my nose. Unfortunately I had to fly out the day after. So I didn't get my treatment. I am confused, as to the Dr's in the UK, have said the dermatologist would not do anything about it. I am unsure how long it had been there prior. This is my second BCC in 3 years, the first was on my back. Can anyone help advise me as to how to get them to listen and get it removed as the biopsy showed the margins were not cleared.

How did you handle things. I am now worried as I was told up to 12 mths, it wouldn't be a big issue, I have passed that now. So starting to panic. I am in Wales, is it different in England? I too have been reading up on things and I agree with you. The timescale is crucial to avoiding bigger issues done the track.

    Thank you

Hi Bee, thank you. I’ve got an appointment on Wednesday with a dermatologist surgeon so I’m sure I’ll have some questions to ask about other people’s experience about different treatments.

    Thanks
