Recently diagnosed with prostate cancer

Hi My name is Sean. Im 63 and have been diagnosed with prostate cancer. My gleason is 3+4 My T stage is T2. I had a PSA of 8.4. As i was only diagnosed 1 week ago still waiting for paper work from hospital. The urologist told me that active surveillance is the best way to go as its in its early stage. I personally feel that i cant go down this route through a fear it could just get out of control. I keep thinking that surgery to get it out is the best route for me. Obviously side effects. Its not easy dealing with something you just cant see. Still in absolute shock. I am married with a very supportive wife and family members. Just wondered what treatments other members are taking. I know i need a bit more time to think properly but just to be told i have cancer is hard to take in.

Thanks

Sean

  • Hi Sean, Sounds like we have a bit in common, I'm 63, was diagnosed with prostate cancer just over a week ago. Gleeson 3+4, stage T2, PSA 5. Cancer contained in prostate. Main symptoms have to get up 3 times a night and increased urgency.

Thankfully caught early with all sorts of treatment options open to me. Like you I'm not comfortable with surveillance and feel having cancer removed from my body makes a lot of sense. I met with a specialist robotics urology surgeon and designated cancer nurse at my diagnosis meeting with my partner.

I'm thinking robotically assisted radical prostatectomy is the best way forward for me and have asked to be listed, hopefully before Christmas. Am also going to be speaking to the Oncology team on Friday 13th ! Another good thing the nurse suggested was attending a meeting with specialists & patients held monthly locally to the hospital to discussconcerns, how peoplehave got on post treatment,  etc. I eill definitely try to get to the next meeting in January.

Planning to get married at the end of January but we both realise post operative symptoms might put a hold on an active sex life for a while!

Would be great to hear back from you, keep your chin up Glyn

    Hi Glyn,
Nice to hear from you. Looks like we are on the same journey, I have my pre-op this Wednesday 4th
of Dec, hopefully have the Op just before Christmas. I went to the last meeting at Dunelm Mill Stockport, If I get the OP around Christmas I wont go to the next one, but will go in Feb. I wasn't too keen on going to the meetings, the Battle axe made me, when I got there it was very informative and nothing like I expected. they are all in the same boat as us and all at different stages and treatments. When I first got told at Stepping Hill Hosp, it was like I had been hit with a sledge hammer it was a good thing my wife came with me as I didn't take anything in except the word cancer, It is still early after your diagnosis, and you will have good days & down days but stay strong. Keep me informed of how things are going with you, and I will let you know how I get on.
    Regards
    Sean
P.S if you ever want to talk ring anytime after 6pm. or leave a message and i'll get back to you
